The fast movements of the opus 10/3 sonata radiate the purest joie de vivre. By extreme contrast the slow movement draws on ancient, archaic grief.

The challenge of the Moonlight Sonata consists in peeling off the romantic patina of two centuries to reveal the work in its radical sombreness and power.
